چکیده

The Monte Carlo program Visual Monte Carlo in vivo (VMC in-vivo) was developed and tested over thirteen years at the Instituto de Radioprotecao e Dosimetria (IRD), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. VMC in-vivo has been extensively validated through international intercomparisons and is available for free download. The program simulates the geometry of Whole Body Counter (WBC) and Gamma-Camera Counting systems. The available phantoms are an anthropomorphic phantom of the whole body, a BOMAB phantom, and the University of Cincinnati knee phantom. VMC in-vivo was originally developed, starting in 1994, to perform photon transport through voxel structures followed by the detection of the photons. In this way, calibration factors were obtained relevant to WBC systems. The resulting program, VMC in-vivo was used in 2001 to perform the calculations for the international WBC intercomparison promoted by the IAEA. VMC was also modified to perform equivalent and effective dose calculations due to gamma emitters, and was also modified to transport protons and alpha particles through voxel structures. Intensive validation work was done involving comparisons of VMC results against physical phantoms, other Monte Carlo programs, and also in other international intercomparisons such in the calculations relevant to the 2007 CONRAD WP4-WP5 intercomparison “Monte Carlo modelling for in-vivo measurements of Americium in a knee phantom”. The good results obtained in the two intercomparisons show that VMC in-vivo can be used to calculate calibration factors for WBC systems.

Enhancing and verification of dose in external radiation therapy using Gd nanoparticles as a theranostic agent: A Monte Carlo simulation study

Introduction: Theranostics, in particular, the use of radionuclides with the capability of simultaneous imaging and treatment has opened new horizons in personalized treatment planning of targeted radiation therapy. In this approach, positive beta or gamma emitters are required for imaging and alpha, beta and Auger electrons for treatment purpose. On the other hand, studies hav...

Amorphous Silicon Flat Panel Imagers for Medical Application

A new gamma camera based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) pixel arrays to be used in nuclear medicine is introduced. Various performance characteristics of a-Si:H imagers are reviewed and compared with those of currently used equipment. An important component in the a-Si:H imager is the scintillator screen. A new approach for fabrication of high resolution CsI(Tl) scintillator layers,...

Evaluation on the Counting Efficiency of a Chair-type Whole Body Counter for Accident Monitoring of Internal Contamination

Major accidental release of radionuclides has the potential for significant radiation exposure in large populations.[1] Rapid monitoring for internally contaminated people is required in radiation accident. If the release contains radionuclides which emit high energy gamma ray, the most suitable mean of providing this monitoring is Whole Body Counter(WBC).[2] Chair-type WBC is more suitable tha...

Study on effect of detector type in estimating buildup factor of gamma-rays by monte carlo simulation based on variance reduction

This paper presents the study on the effect of detector type in estimating gamma rays buildup factor. In this regard, the flux buildup factors of gamma rays emitted by an isotropic point 60Co source in mean energy 1.253 MeV was evaluated after passing through the Pb, W, Zn, and Ti sample in thickness of 1-5 cm by MCNPX. Four common detector types in simulation of measurement was defined to esti...
